AI phone calls for business now go both ways. An AI agent can answer the calls coming in, and it can also place calls for you: checking stock with a supplier, chasing a vendor for a callback date, or confirming an appointment, then reporting back with what it learned.

That second kind is the newer one. These calls are short, but each one means hold music, phone tag, and a note you scribble on the back of an invoice.

This guide covers the three kinds of AI phone calls a business uses, eight calls worth handing off, the limits a business calling agent needs, and how InvoicifyAI's Call for Me compares with Google's consumer calling features.

Three Kinds of AI Phone Calls

InboundYour customers calling you"Can someone look at my furnace this week?"AI Receptionist
Outbound to your customersPeople who already know your business"Your invoice is 20 days overdue. When can you pay?"Invoice Reminder Agent, Estimate Follow-up, Lead Qualification, Customer Feedback
Calls on your behalfSuppliers, vendors, offices, other businesses"Do you have a 40-gallon water heater in stock?"Call for Me

Most "AI calling" software is built for the first two, or for sales teams dialing lists. The third kind is different. It is one call, to one business, with one goal, and the value is in the answer you get back.

8 Calls You Can Hand Off to an AI Agent

1. Check whether a supplier has a part in stock

Tell the agent the part, the quantity, and the pickup window you need. It calls the supply house, asks, and reports back with what they have and when. You decide whether to send someone.

2. Ask a vendor for a firm callback or delivery date

Chasing a vendor is the definition of phone tag. The agent asks for a specific date or callback time and records exactly what they said, so the promise is in writing on your side.

3. business hours or pickup details

Is the permit counter open Saturday? Does the rental yard take returns after 5? A one-minute question that can turn into a long wait on hold.

4. Ask a set of questions and collect the answers

You can give the agent several questions in one request: lead time, minimum order, whether they deliver to your area. The report lists each answer, plus anything it could not get. If you add details such as a PO number, the agent may share them if asked, so leave out anything you would not want said on the call.

5. Book an appointment you asked it to book

When your request explicitly asks for a booking, the agent can book it, such as a vehicle service slot for your work truck. If the request does not ask for a booking, it will not make one.

6. Cancel an appointment you asked it to cancel

The same rule applies to cancellations: only when you ask, and the report tells you what the other side confirmed.

7. Follow up on an earlier call

If a call left open items, send a follow-up in one click instead of writing the request again.

8. Make the call later, at the right time

Schedule the call for when the other business is open, so you are not trying to remember to call the supplier at 7:30 the next morning. If the call cannot start on time, it is skipped and you are told, rather than calling late.

What comes back after a call: a summary, the answers to your questions, and open items, along with the transcript and, when one is available, the recording. Transcripts and recordings are kept for 30 days, so note anything you need to keep longer.

While the call is live: the agent can work through phone menus, you can watch a live transcript and cancel at any time, and if you turn on Pull me in, it can ring your mobile when the call needs you.

What a Business Calling Agent Should Never Do

An AI that can dial a phone needs hard limits. These are the ones built into Call for Me:

  • It never pays, accepts a price, buys, signs, or makes promises. It can ask what something costs. It cannot agree to it.
  • It books or cancels only when your request explicitly asks.
  • It screens every request before dialing. Emergency numbers and service lines are always blocked, and campaign, survey, or bulk calls are declined. It places one call per request, built for one goal, not for dialing lists.
  • It is built to decline calls meant to pressure or deceive, such as harassment, debt pressure, legal process, or pretending to be someone else.
  • It calls from your company's InvoicifyAI number, so the business you call sees a consistent number for your company.
  • It calls US and Canada numbers only.
  • Calls leave a record: a summary and transcript, plus a recording when one is available, kept for 30 days so you can check what was said.

For why the screening happens before dialing rather than mid-call, read AI Agent Guardrails: Why We Screen Before Dialing, Not Mid-Call.

If a call needs negotiation, judgment, or money changing hands, make that call yourself. The agent is for the calls where you just need the facts.

Google's AI Calling vs a Business Calling Agent

Google has worked on AI calling since Duplex, which it unveiled in 2018 for restaurant bookings and salon appointments. In 2026, US consumers may see two newer versions:

  • Gemini "Call for me", in early preview since September 2026 on Pixel 11 phones. It can get hours, stock, and quotes, book or manage appointments, navigate phone menus, and wait on hold. It needs a US number, a Google AI subscription, and English, and it calls from your own phone number.
  • AI calling in Google Search, which can call local businesses to check prices and availability for you, starting with US searches.

These are built for personal errands. Here is how they compare with a calling agent built for a business:

As of October 2026, none of Google's AI calling features is confirmed for Canada. If your business is in Canada, or calls Canadian suppliers, a consumer feature will not cover you.

How to Send an AI Call With Call for Me

  1. Describe the goal: Type what you need to find out, in plain words. For example, "Ask if they have two 40-gallon gas water heaters for pickup tomorrow, and what time they close."
  2. Choose who to call: Pick the business and number. US and Canada numbers only.
  3. Pick now or later: Send the call right away or schedule it for when the other business is open.
  4. Let the agent make the call: It calls from your company's InvoicifyAI number and works through your questions. Watch the live transcript if you like, or cancel at any time.
  5. Read the report: Check the summary, answers, and open items. The transcript, and the recording when one is available, are there if you need the exact wording.
  6. Follow up if needed: Send a follow-up in one click when something is still open, or mark the call resolved.

What It Costs

Call for Me is included on every InvoicifyAI plan, with no add-on to buy and no per-call fee. Its calls use the same monthly AI voice minutes as the AI Receptionist and any outbound agents you turn on, and each call has a time limit you set. After included minutes, paid-cycle calls are billed per minute at your plan's overage rate unless the owner's overage limit pauses them. See pricing for current plans and included minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can AI make phone calls for my business?

Yes. AI agents can answer inbound calls, call your own customers about leads, quotes, and invoices, and place calls to other businesses for you. InvoicifyAI's Call for Me calls a supplier, vendor, or office with your questions and reports back with a summary, answers, and transcript, plus the recording when one is available.

What are AI phone calls?

AI phone calls are phone conversations where an AI voice agent speaks with the other person in real time. The agent follows a goal and rules you set, such as asking a list of questions, and records the result.

Rules depend on where you and the person you call are, and on the type of call. Marketing calls to consumers face the strictest rules, and some regulators treat AI-generated voices like prerecorded voices. Call-recording consent and AI-disclosure rules also vary by state and province, and some require every party's consent. You can set the agent's greeting, for example to say it is an AI agent calling for your company. Call for Me screens out campaign and bulk calls, but that does not make every call lawful, so check the rules that apply to you. This is general information, not legal advice.

Can an AI caller agree to a price or pay for something?

It should not. Call for Me is built never to pay, accept prices, buy, sign, or make promises. It can ask what something costs and report the answer back to you.

What is the difference between automated phone calls and AI phone calls?

Automated phone calls usually play a recorded message or a fixed menu. AI phone calls hold a real two-way conversation, adapt to what the other person says, and return structured answers instead of a delivery report.

Which countries can Call for Me call?

Call for Me calls US and Canada numbers only.

Does the business I call see my number?

The call comes from your company's InvoicifyAI number.
